- Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) -
This feature is available on DR-300 and DR-400 Digital Audio Repeater / Mixer cards. A VCA is used to
adjust an audio track's volume by applying a control signal to the Digital Audio Repeater / Mixer card.
Typical uses of this feature are for traveling sound effects, remote or automatic volume control, or in
live, special event, and semi-live shows which require dynamic volume control.
The control signal is a simple 0 to 10 VDC signal, just like you would feed to a lamp dimmer. This can
be fed to each card individually through a two position screw block on the back of the card cage, or
can come from any of eight 'VCA BUS' lines which are connected to all of the cards in the system. The
latter is used when you want to control the volume of a number of cards from a single control signal
source, or from a MA-100 PA MASTER card. This 0-10 VDC control signal is used as a reference which is
fed to the VOLUME and then through the HALF MUTE VOLUME control pots on the front panel (see block
diagrams). This means that the 0-10 VDC control signal is used to set the maximum volume obtainable
from the VCA, with the actual level set a level somewhere below this by adjusting the VOLUME and HALF
MUTE VOLUME pots. This is especially useful when a number of cards' VCAs are controlled from the same
external signal.
The MA-100 PA MASTER card has eight D/A converters which can generate and deliver 0 to 10 VDC
signals to the eight VCA bus lines. Commands from the PA STATIONS can be used to ramp the levels of
these outputs up and down to control the volume of a group of cards which have been configured to
use the VCA bus as their reference. Commands sent to the MA-100 through the serial port can control
the voltage level of these outputs directly.
- Shelving Equalizer -
This is a SHELVING EQUALIZER which can be used to cut or boost the bass or treble in the output
signals by up to 20 dB. This is used to peak the audio quality of the audio signal to match the amplifiers
and speakers used in your applications. Special versions of these filters can be made in high or low pass
versions for sub-woofer and bi-amplifier applications.
